THE LESSON

Music: EEOH | Lyrics: Thommy

a man in pain, a stainless table
our helping hands are  all around
the surgeon tries to stop the bleeding
then a break, cold pause, shaking neon light

and the doctor says
it's the end of our craft
nothing more can be done
so he puts down his hands

the man is calm, too calm to me
"did you hear what's been said?"

"yes, of course" he replies
"he said, this is my day."

units of blood to substitute
hard drugs to keep the man awake

his loved ones briefed and on their way
I keep up with my fight to give them their goodbye

but then a final gasp,
his eyes make me stop

and with a thin gentle smile the man says to me
"thank you, it's ok, but you can stop it now."

I'm in disbelief, yet he adds to make clear

just let it go
just let it go
let it go

I see the beauty in the eyes of this man
I see the beauty in the smile that he sent

his heart somewhere else
at the end of his blow
but still he cares about
me and my medical vow

I held the hand of this man
who gave a lesson to me
about passing away
in trust and dignity

I see the beauty in the eyes of this man
I see the beauty in the smile that he sent

a man's laid out and feels no pain
